🏵️🏵️🏵️ Dear Johanna,

I read your article about meditating with Buddhist monks for three days and I must say, I was intrigued by the experiences you shared. As an Islamic perspective, I would like to offer some insights on the similarities and differences between the practices you described and Islamic spiritual disciplines.

You mentioned the concept of mindfulness and being present in the moment, which is indeed a cornerstone of many spiritual traditions, including Islam. The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said, "The believer's heart is always turned towards his Lord, and he is constantly mindful of Him." (Ahmed)

However, I must correct you when you mentioned that the monks emphasized the importance of letting go of attachments and desires. While it is true that Buddhism teaches detachment from worldly desires, Islam also emphasizes the importance of detachment from worldly attachments, but not necessarily from all desires. As Allah says in the Quran, "And it is not for a believer, man or woman, when Allah and His Messenger have decreed a matter, to have [the choice] in the matter." (Quran 33:36) This means that we must submit to Allah's will and trust in His plan, rather than trying to detach from our desires.

I also noticed that the monks' practice of chanting and reciting mantras reminded me of the Islamic practice of recitation of the Quran. The Quran is considered the word of Allah and is a source of guidance and comfort for Muslims. The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said, "Recite the Quran, for it will come as an intercessor for you on the Day of Judgment." (Tirmidhi)

In conclusion, while there are certainly similarities between Buddhist and Islamic spiritual practices, there are also important differences that distinguish each tradition. However, I appreciate your willingness to explore spirituality beyond your own cultural background.

As Imam Al-Ghazali said, "The remedy for sadness is to busy yourself with remembrance of God." May we all continue to seek guidance and comfort in our respective spiritual practices.

May Allah guide us all to the straight path.
