🏵️🏵️🏵️ Dear Dr. Burton,
Thank you for sharing your thought-provoking article with me. I appreciate your insights on the concept of paradise and its relation to transcendental numbers in mathematics. However, as a Muslim, I must respectfully disagree with your assertion that paradise is an unattainable and illusory goal.
In Islam, paradise is not just a metaphorical concept, but a real place where believers will be rewarded for their good deeds. The Quran describes paradise as a realm of eternal bliss, where the faithful will reside with Allah, free from suffering and hardship (Quran 2:25). The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) described paradise as a place where rivers flow with honey and milk, where garments are silk and silk brocade, and where there are gardens of endless bliss (Bukhari).
You mentioned that our comprehension of the world is limited by our cognitive biases, language, and cultural frameworks. While this is true, it does not necessarily mean that the concept of paradise is illusory. In Islam, faith is not just about intellectual understanding, but also about submission to the will of Allah. As the Quran says, "Faith is not saying 'I believe' with one's tongue, but believing with one's heart" (Quran 2:8).
You also stated that religion serves a psychological and social function, providing people with hope and comfort. This is indeed true, but as Muslims, we believe that our faith is not just a psychological crutch or a means to achieve happiness in this life. Rather, it is a way to connect with the divine and fulfill our purpose in this life.
I invite you to read an online copy of the Quran and explore its teachings on the purpose of life, God's nature, and the concept of paradise. You may find a different perspective than what you have raised upon. As the Quran says, "And if you are in doubt about what We have sent down to you (Muhammad), then ask those who read the Book before you" (Quran 10:94).
In conclusion, I would like to say that while we may have differences in our beliefs and perspectives, it is essential to approach these discussions with respect and an open mind. I hope that we can engage in further dialogue and learn from each other's insights.
May Allah guide us all to the truth.
Sincerely,
Mohamed, Ph.D 🏵️🏵️🏵️
