Dear Alberto,
I would like to express my gratitude for your thought-provoking article on the 4 spiritual rules from Alan Watts to live a better life. Your words have resonated deeply with me, and I'd like to draw a parallel from Islam.
The concept of living in the present moment, which Watts emphasized, is reminiscent of the Islamic concept of "ihya al-halal" (reviving the divine blessings). In Islam, we are reminded to focus on the present moment and appreciate the blessings we have, rather than dwelling on the past or worrying about the future.
Regarding the rule of "acceptance," Islam teaches us to accept whatever comes our way with patience and gratitude, as expressed in the Quran: "And when harm touches you, be patient. Indeed, the harm is only (as) an ordeal for you." (Quran 2:155)
Regarding the rule of "non-identification," Islam teaches us to recognize that our true selves are not our physical bodies or our ego, but rather our souls, which are created by God. This concept is echoed in the Quran: "O mankind, We have created you from a male and a female, and made you into nations and tribes that you may know one another. Indeed, the most noble of you in the sight of Allah is the most righteous of you." (Quran 49:13)
Regarding the rule of "non-judgment," Islam encourages us to judge others based on their actions and intentions, rather than their appearances or social status. This is reflected in the Quran: "O you who have believed, do not let some men among you laugh at others; it may be that those who are laughed at are better than those who laugh." (Quran 49:11)
Finally, regarding the rule of "letting go," Islam teaches us to let go of our attachments and desires, and to trust in God's providence. This is reflected in the Quran: "And whoever puts his trust in Allah, He will suffice him. And Allah is the Great Provider." (Quran 65:3)
I hope these parallels resonate with you, and I encourage you to reflect on how these principles can be applied in your daily life.
Thank you for your thought-provoking article.
