Dear Brenda, I would like to thank you for your thought-provoking article "Let Me Be Just Me". Your reflections on the human desire to be acknowledged and understood resonated deeply with me. In Islam, we believe that each individual is created with a unique purpose and has a specific role to play in society. The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said, "Each of you is a shepherd and each of you is responsible for his flock." (Bukhari)

Your call to reject the societal pressure to conform and instead embrace one's true self is a powerful message. In Islam, we believe that true fulfillment comes from living a life that is in harmony with our Creator's plan. The Quran says, "O you who have believed, submit to Allah and to your Messenger and strive in His cause as He commands you" (Quran 8:72). This submission is not about blindly following rules, but about living a life that is authentic and true to oneself.

As Muslims, we are encouraged to be ourselves, without pretenses or artificial masks. The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said, "The best of you are those who are best to their families." (Tirmidhi) This means that we should strive to be the best version of ourselves, without trying to impress others or fit into societal norms.

In the end, I would like to agree with your sentiments and urge others to join us in embracing our true selves. Let us reject the pressure to conform and instead strive to live a life that is authentic and meaningful. As the Quran says, "Indeed, We will test your patience and [see] how you act" (Quran 89:17). May we have the courage to be ourselves and live a life that is pleasing to Allah.
