Say: He is Allah, the One and Only; Allah, the Eternal, Absolute; He begetteth not, nor is He begotten; And there is none like unto Him. {Quran: Surat Al-Ikhlaas}

(1) In the name of Allah, the Entirely Merciful, the Especially Merciful. (2) [All] praise is [due] to Allah, Lord of the worlds, (3) The Entirely Merciful, the Especially Merciful, (4) Sovereign of the Day of Recompense. (5) It is You we worship and You we ask for help. (6) Guide us to the straight path, (7) The path of those upon whom You have bestowed favor, not of those who have evoked [Your] anger or of those who are astray. {Quran: Surat Al-Faatiha}

Allah is the Arabic word for God.

It is with great enthusiasm that I share with you the significance of the term "Allah" in Islam, as well as its usage among Arabic-speaking Jews and Christians. This term, derived from "al-ilah," meaning "the God," is a thoughtful representation of the divine in their respective faiths.

In Islam, Allah is the one and only God. He is the creator of the universe, and He is the only being who deserves to be worshipped. Allah is eternal, all-powerful, all-knowing, and all-merciful. He is the source of all goodness and justice.

Background and History

It's absolutely fascinating to trace the roots of the concept of Allah back to the ancient Semitic religions of Mesopotamia and Arabia. The term "Allah" was initially documented in the 3rd century CE and later featured prominently in the Quran, which was revealed to the revered Prophet Muhammad in the 7th century CE. It's customary to pay tribute to the Prophet Muhammad by including the phrase "peace be upon him" when mentioning his name. This goes to show the rich history and profound significance of Allah in Islamic culture.

“Say, ‘He is Allah, [who is] One, Allah, the Eternal Refuge. He neither begets nor is born, Nor is there to Him any equivalent.’” (Quran 112:1–4)

“And your God is one God. There is no deity [worthy of worship] except Him, the Entirely Merciful, the Especially Merciful.” (Quran 2:163)

“And Allah is the Hearing, the Seeing.” (Quran 2:120)

Allah knows everything about the past, present, and future.

The order and complexity of the universe; the universe is so vast and complex that it is difficult to believe that it could have come into existence by chance. A more likely explanation is that the universe was created by a powerful and intelligent being.

On a moral law, humans have a natural sense of right and wrong. This sense of morality suggests that there is a higher power that has instilled these moral values in us. This higher power is Allah.

What do we Muslims believe about Allah? Because:

  1. He is the one God, Who has no partner.
  2. Nothing is like Him. He is the Creator, not created, nor a part of His creation.
  3. He is All-Powerful, absolutely Just.
  4. There is no other entity in the entire universe worthy of worship besides Him.
  5. He is First, Last, and Everlasting; He was when nothing was and will be when nothing else remains.
  6. He is the All-Knowing, and All-Merciful, the Supreme, the Sovereign.
  7. It is only He Who is capable of granting life to anything.
  8. He sent His Messengers (peace be upon them all) to guide all mankind.
  9. He sent Muhammad as the last Prophet and Messenger for all mankind.
  10. Allah knows what is in our hearts.

Sayings (Hadith) of Prophet Muhammad

“The most superior of all expressions is ‘La ilaha illallah (There is no god but Allah).’”

“Whoever bears witness that there is no god but Allah, and that Muhammad is His Messenger, will enter Paradise.” (Book of Sahih Bukhari)

‘If the heavens and the earth were to be folded up in my hand, Allah would still be greater than them.’” (Book of Sahih Muslim)

“The most beloved names to Allah are: al-Rahman (the Most Merciful) and al-Rahim (the Especially Merciful).” (Book of Sahih Muslim)

“Allah is beautiful and He loves beauty.” (Book of Sahih Bukhari)

These Hadith say that Allah is a powerful and transcendent being who is beyond our comprehension. They also say that Allah is the only true God and that no other god exists besides him.

The concept of Allah has several implications for human life. First, it means that humans are accountable to Allah for their actions. Second, it means that humans should strive to live in accordance with Allah’s will. Third, humans should have hope in Allah’s mercy and forgiveness.

As the world becomes more interconnected, people from different cultures and religions will be more likely to come into contact with each other. This will lead to increased dialogue and understanding about different religious beliefs.
