In a world where we are constantly bombarded with information, it’s easy to get caught up in the daily grind and forget to ask the big questions. But what is the purpose of our existence? What lies beyond this life? These questions have puzzled scholars and philosophers for centuries, and yet, they remain some of the most pressing concerns of humanity.

As Muslims, we are encouraged to seek knowledge and ask questions, as Allah says in the Quran: “And say, ‘Are those who know equal to those who do not know?’ It is only people of wisdom who will remember.” (Quran 39:9)

The Importance of Asking Questions

Asking questions is not only a sign of intelligence but also a sign of humility. It shows that we are willing to learn, to grow, and to improve. The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said, “The most beloved of deeds to Allah are those that are done regularly, even if they are small.” (Bukhari)

Similarly, asking questions regularly is a deed that is pleasing to Allah, as it shows our willingness to learn and understand His creation.

The Power of Intrinsic Questions

Intrinsic questions are those that explore the deeper meaning and purpose of life. They are questions that get at the heart of who we are and why we are here. Examples of intrinsic questions include: What is the nature of God? What is the purpose of life? What happens after death?

The Quran encourages us to ask these types of questions when it says, “And He has set for you from the heavens an example: are there any among them who disbelieve?” (Quran 2:29)

This verse reminds us that Allah has given us the gift of life and has set an example for us to follow. By asking intrinsic questions, we can deepen our understanding of His creation and His plan for us.

The Power of Extrinsic Questions

Extrinsic questions, on the other hand, are those that address specific problems or challenges in our lives. They are questions that help us find solutions and answers in our daily lives.

Examples of extrinsic questions include: How can I improve my prayer? How can I be a better Muslim? What are some ways I can give back to my community?

The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said, “A Muslim is like a citadel for another Muslim.” (Bukhari)

This hadith emphasizes the importance of supporting one another and seeking knowledge from each other. By asking extrinsic questions, we can seek guidance from others and work together to solve problems and improve our lives.

In the End:

In conclusion, asking big questions is a powerful way to deepen our understanding of ourselves and the world around us. By asking intrinsic questions, we can gain a deeper understanding of Allah’s plan for us. By asking extrinsic questions, we can find solutions to specific challenges in our lives. As Muslims, we are encouraged to seek knowledge and ask questions, as it is a sign of intelligence and humility.

So let us make it a habit to ask big questions, whether they be intrinsic or extrinsic. Let us seek knowledge from Allah’s book and from one another. And let us remember that the power of questions lies not just in finding answers but also in seeking wisdom and guidance.

“And indeed, those who have been given knowledge feel the weight of their responsibility.” (Quran 7:196)
