The importance of mental health in Islam cannot be overstated, and various Quranic verses and Hadith emphasize the significance of seeking help, having faith in Allah, and utilizing techniques to manage anxiety and other mental health issues. 🏵️🏵️
In Islam, mental health is recognized as a crucial component of overall wellbeing. Seeking help through therapy, medication, and other resources is actively encouraged. The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) is reported to have said, "The strong believer is better and more beloved to Allah than the weak believer, although there is good in both. Strive for that which will benefit you, seek help from Allah, and do not feel helpless" (Sunan Ibn Majah 4211). This hadith serves as a reminder that while struggles and hardships are a part of life, seeking help and support is essential.
In the Quran, Allah reminds believers to turn to Him during times of difficulty: "And seek help through patience and prayer, and indeed, it is difficult except for the humbly submissive [to Allah]" (2:45). Likewise, the verse "Indeed, with hardship [will be] ease" (94:5) highlights that periods of difficulty are followed by ease. This reassurance can provide hope and comfort during challenging times.
Additionally, Islam recognizes the value of techniques such as mindfulness and meditation in improving mental health. The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) is reported to have said, "There is a polish for everything that removes rust, and the polish for the heart is the remembrance of Allah" (Al-Tirmidhi 3571). Mindfulness of Allah can serve as a means of reflection and centring oneself during times of stress and anxiety.
