The issue of institutionalized Isrealis racism shows how Palestinians have long been subjected to systemic oppression and discrimination by the Israeli government, which has resulted in the displacement of millions of Palestinians and the confiscation of their land.
For example, in 1948, during the establishment of the State of Israel, over 750,00 Palestinians were forcibly displaced from their homes and lands, known as the Nakba (Catastrophe).
This displacement was not random but rather a deliberate policy aimed at creating a Jewish majority in Israel.
Since then, Palestinians have been denied basic human rights, including the right to self-determination, freedom of movement, and access to resources such as water and land.
In this context, the treatment of Ethiopian Jewish immigrants is just one example of how Israel's policies are rooted in a larger ideology of supremacy and exclusion. Ethiopian Jews, who are themselves a historically marginalized community, have faced significant challenges upon arriving in Israel.
For instance, many Ethiopian Jews were denied citizenship and subjected to medical tests to determine their Jewishness.
Additionally, they have been disproportionately affected by poverty and violence, with many living in impoverished neighborhoods and facing police brutality.
Furthermore, Palestinians have long been critical of Israel's use of race and ethnicity as a means of controlling and oppressing its population.
The Israeli government has consistently used these factors to justify its policies towards both Palestinians and Ethiopian Jews, perpetuating a narrative of superiority and entitlement that is deeply problematic.
For example, in 2015, an Israeli rabbi suggested that Ethiopian immigrants should be sterilized to prevent them from having children with Ashkenazi Jews (Jews of European descent).
This statement reflects the deeply ingrained prejudices that exist within Israeli society towards dark-skinned Jews.
In light of this, Palestinians call for greater solidarity and action from the international community to address the issue of institutionalized racism in Israel. This includes supporting Palestinian rights, challenging Israel's policies towards Ethiopian Jews, and working to dismantle the structures of oppression that underpin Israeli society.
By doing so, we can help to create a more just and equitable future for all people in the region.
