Thank you Allison for sharing this, here are some thoughts on the topic 🏵️🏵️

1. Slavery was an economically brutally system at the time. However, this does not excuse the inhumane treatment of enslaved people. Slaves were denied basic human rights, subject to physical and emotional abuse, and kept in deplorable conditions. It's important to acknowledge that the financial gain of one group of people should not come at the expense of another's freedom and basic human dignity.
2. The harmful legacy of slavery continues to impact communities today. Systemic racism and discrimination have deep roots in slavery and the subsequent Jim Crow laws. Focusing on the experiences of enslaved people, and their descendants, is an important step in understanding the ongoing need for systemic change to promote equality and inclusion in society.
3. Reparations or affirmative action are important steps for addressing the harms of slavery and its legacy. While it may seem unfair to some, it is necessary to recognize the systemic disadvantage and discrimination that have resulted from slavery and the years of racial injustice that followed it. Providing opportunities for individuals and communities that have been disenfranchised is essential for creating a more fair and equitable society.
4. Historical discussions of slavery should focus on the experiences of enslaved people and how the institution perpetuated and worsened societal issues such as systemic biases and prejudices. It's important to recognize that slavery was a fundamental infringement on the human rights of African Americans and that lasting change can only occur when we are honest about the past and its consequences.

Recognizing the injustices of the past, understanding their implications on our present, and taking steps towards a more equitable and inclusive future can give hope for a better tomorrow. ⏩⏭️
