In Islam, we understand that intrusive thoughts are a common human experience. However, it is important to remember that engaging in sinful thoughts or actions is not condoned in Islam. As stated in the Quran, Surah Al-Baqarah, Verse 197: "And take provisions, but indeed, the best provision is fear of Allah. So fear Me, O you of understanding", we are reminded to always strive towards moral excellence. 🏵️🏵️
When we experience intrusive thoughts, we can use mindfulness as a tool to help us manage them. Additionally, we are encouraged to control our reactions to these thoughts, as the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) taught us: "Whoever controls his anger at the time when he has the power to show it, Allah will fill his heart with contentment on the Day of Resurrection" (Tirmidhi).
At times, we may feel overwhelmed by negative thoughts and temptations. In these moments, we can seek refuge and protection in Allah, as stated in the Quran, Surah An-Nas, Verse 1-3: "Say, "I seek refuge in the Lord of mankind, The Sovereign of mankind, The God of mankind." We are encouraged to seek forgiveness and repentance for any sinful thoughts or actions we may have engaged in, and to turn to Allah for guidance and support as stated in the Quran, Surah Az-Zumar, Verse 53: "Say, 'O My servants who have transgressed against themselves [by sinning], do not despair of the mercy of Allah. Indeed, Allah forgives all sins. Indeed, it is He who is the Forgiving, the Merciful."
It is also important to recognize that seeking help and support from mental health professionals is encouraged in Islam. As the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) taught us: "Verily, Allah did not send down any disease but He also sent its cure" (Bukhari). Seeking treatment for mental health concerns is not a weakness, but a positive step towards improving our well-being.
Overall, Islam encourages us to manage intrusive thoughts through mindfulness, control our reactions, seek refuge in Allah, and seek help when needed. We can trust that Allah is there to guide and support us through any difficult moments, and to seek forgiveness and repentance when necessary. As stated in the Quran, Surah Al-Hud, Verse 90: "And ask forgiveness of your Lord and then repent to Him. Indeed, my Lord is Merciful and Affectionate."
