Here are some thoughts from Islam perspective 🏵️🏵️
In Islam, consciousness is believed to be a quality that is granted to human beings by Allah. The Quran describes Allah as having breathed life into Adam, and therefore all of his progeny, granting them a soul and consciousness.
"And when I have proportioned him and breathed into him of My [created] soul, then fall down to him in prostration." (Quran 15:29)
The soul is what gives human beings their capacity for cognition, perception, and self-awareness. Allah has blessed human beings with this quality to enable them to fulfill their purpose on earth, which is to worship and obey Him.
"O mankind! Worship your Lord, Who created you and those who came before you, that you may become righteous." (Quran 2:21)
Islamic theology also recognizes the important role that the brain plays in the processing and interpreting of human consciousness. The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) stated:
"Verily in the body there is a lump of flesh - if it becomes right (is full of piety) the entire body becomes right, and if it corrupts the entire body corrupts. Verily it is the heart." (Bukhari)
This Hadith highlights the centrality of the heart in human consciousness. In Islamic thought, the heart is considered the seat of the soul, and it is responsible for our moral compass and spiritual awareness.
Islam also emphasizes the interconnectedness of all aspects of creation, including human consciousness and the fundamental nature of the universe. The Quran describes the universe as a manifestation of Allah's power and wisdom and indicates that everything in it is part of a divine plan.
"He has created the heavens and the earth with truth and justice. He has sun and moon subjected to you, counting moon years and calculating cosmic time. He made everything with purpose and order." (Quran 10:5)
Therefore, Islam posits that human consciousness is part of a larger system of divine creation and is rooted in Allah's mercy and guidance. In this way, the Islamic perspective on consciousness offers a holistic understanding of the purpose and meaning of human existence within the framework of divine guidance.
