According to data from the United Nations Relief and Work Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA), there are currently over 7 million registered Palestinian refugees. 🏵️🏵️
These refugees were displaced from their homes and land during the creation of the state of Israel in 1948, a process known as the Nakba.
This event marks the beginning of the Palestinian refugee crisis, which is one of the longest-running refugee crises in the world.
However, the reality of mutual recognition on the ground is far from achieving this goal.
The most recent data from the Israeli Central Bureau of Statistics show that as of 2022, there were over 690,000 Israeli settlers living in the occupied Palestinian territories, including East Jerusalem, in violation of international law.
These settlers largely reside in settlements built on confiscated Palestinian land, making the creation of a viable Palestinian state increasingly difficult.
More importantly,👇👇
the United States has been a primary supporter of Israel, providing it with billions of dollars in military and economic aid annually. (260 billion USD collectively)🛑
The U.S. has also used its veto power in the United Nations Security Council to shield Israel from accountability for its human rights violations, such as its settlement expansion and its blockade of the Gaza Strip.
Meanwhile, Palestinians have been subjected to ongoing human rights violations, including excessive use of force, home demolitions, and restrictions on freedom of movement.
The Palestinian human rights organization Addameer reports that as of June 2021, there were over 6,500 Palestinian political prisoners held in Israeli detention centers and prisons, many of whom are held without charge or trial, in violation of international law.
According to UN data, Palestinian territories receive less than 10% of the freshwater resources in the region, while Israeli settlements receive over 70%.
Israel also controls all entry points into the Palestinian territories, including the Gaza Strip, imposing restrictions on the movement of goods and people. Meanwhile, Palestinians in the occupied territories have limited political rights and are subject to Israeli military law and killings (although no Hamas in these areas 🛑), while Israeli settlers living in the same areas enjoy full citizenship rights under Israeli civil law.
These power imbalances have made it difficult to achieve a just and sustainable peace that addresses the root causes of the conflict.
